Why your messaging is not as private as you think: decryption of ANSSI recommendations

When you exchange sensitive information on WhatsApp, Signal or Telegram, do you really have the assurance that your data remains confidential? ANSSI (National Agency for Information Systems Security) warns: none of the general public instant messaging services guarantee total confidentiality, particularly in a professional context.

The paradox of “secure” messaging

Among the apps analyzed, Signal seems to stand out with its end-to-end encryption enabled by default and its verified security protocol. However, even this solution encounters limits, in particular with its automatic synchronization of contacts, considered problematic. WhatsApp, on the other hand, offers convenient features like cloud backup, but these come with an increased privacy risk. As for Telegram, often seen as an innovative player, its encryption is only activated for “secret conversations”, leaving other exchanges more vulnerable.

What about text messages? They remain totally outdated in terms of security: no end-to-end encryption and no real protection against interceptions.

The implications for businesses

For anyone who handles sensitive data, these limits are not trivial. The massive collection of information by foreign actors (WhatsApp via Meta, Telegram of Russian origin) exposes people to increased risks of surveillance or data leaks. ANSSI therefore recommends considering alternatives designed specifically to guarantee the security of exchanges in critical environments.
