Yann LeCun leaves Meta, and launches his startup in Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI)

It’s now official, Yann LeCun is ending twelve years at Meta and launching a company dedicated to Advanced Machine Intelligence (AMI). The announcement confirms rumors that the researcher was no longer aligned with the group’s AI strategy, now refocused on LLMs and sales assistants.

His departure ends a period where the founder of FAIR embodied the long term, in a company which had to adopt a more reactive posture in the face of OpenAI and others. Tensions were heightened when Meta created its new AI division this summer, and chose to recruit Alexandr Wang rather than give the role to LeCun. His public presence, after the criticism surrounding Llama 4, would have been desired internally, as he was no longer perceived as an evangelist of the group’s strategy.

Yann LeCun will leave Meta at the end of the year and will create a startup continuing work on systems capable of understanding the physical world, manipulating persistent memory and planning complex sequences of actions. AMI is not an extension of LLMs but a conceptual alternative, based on world models, multimodal self-supervised learning and physical prediction. Yann LeCun considers this path to be the next scientific breakthrough.

Meta has confirmed that it will be a partner of the company, with privileged access to the innovations that will be developed there.
