On the chessboard of AI applied to software development, Cursor has just added a strong signal that DSI and ESN must hear. The American startup announces a Series D of 2.3 billion dollars, or around 2 billion euros, for a post-money valuation increased to 29.3 billion dollars. An operation which confirms the speed with which software publishing driven by AI is establishing itself as a strategic segment, both for investors and for large technology groups.
Cursor became known as a code editor integrating proprietary models capable of generating, modifying and analyzing complete code bases. The product spread quickly to engineering teams thanks to an interface designed to reduce repetitive tasks, accelerate code writing and instantly answer contextual questions on an application basis. The company now claims widespread everyday use in advanced engineering organizations.
Cursor explains that he wanted to create a code editor that was “more useful, more pleasant and more fun than anything that exists today” and also mentions the hypothesis of an interface where “the source code itself begins to fade away”. Software development using AI is expected to reach a breakthrough level in the coming years, which will completely reconfigure the organization of companies’ technical teams and significantly shake up the ESN market.
The ecosystem of AI-generated code has become denser in just a few months, driven by the arrival of new players and the rise in automation challenges. Cursor operates in a competitive space that includes OpenAI, Anthropic, Cognition, and even traditional publishers seeking to integrate more advanced AI capabilities. Claude Code, the code generation product launched by Anthropic, quickly gained visibility. Cognition also strengthened its position with the integration of Windsurf, a tool specialized in the production of complex code. Historical publishers are trying to catch up with these new dynamics, but new entrants are currently maintaining a higher rate of iteration.
Cursor now boasts global adoption and rapid scale-up. The company says it has crossed the $1 billion threshold in annualized revenue, with a user base including “millions of developers and many of the world’s most accomplished engineering organizations.” It also emphasizes that its proprietary models “now generate more code than almost all other LLMs in the world”, an orientation which reflects the importance given to end-to-end control of its technological pipeline.
Cursor loops a series D of $2.3 billionor approximately 2 billion eurosfor a post-money valuation of $29.3 billion. The company has more than 300 employees. Founded within the Anysphere laboratory in 2022, it was created by Michael Truell and the original Anysphere team. Investors in this round include ACCEL, THRIVE CAPITAL, ANDREESSEN HOROWITZ, DST GLOBALas well as COATUE, NVIDIA And GOOGLE. Cursor declares having exceeded $1 billion in annualized revenue.
