Student and entrepreneur: how to reconcile the two?

Incubators, nurseries… in a little over a decade, they have multiplied at the same time as the status of the micro-enterprise has been consolidated, offering particularly attractive conditions for creating its structure. Many young entrepreneurs, buoyed by their student-entrepreneur status, have created businesses that have become real success stories. Reconciling the two is a challenge, but isn’t being an entrepreneur always about taking on challenges?

The world of business, now integrated into the heart of almost all study courses, inspires vocations among many students who no longer wait for the end of their training to begin. The challenge is significant and to secure their projects, the government has perpetuated and strengthened, since the end of 2014, the National Student-Entrepreneur Status (SNEE). Details in 2026.

Who is this status for?

Are you a student (or recent graduate), you have at least a baccalaureate or an equivalent level and would like to set up a quality project? Then the national student-entrepreneur status is for you. As has been the case for several years, there is no longer an age limit set at 28 to benefit from it, thus encouraging resumption of studies and retraining.

Your project must be evaluated by the PEPITE (Student Centers for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship) engagement committee. These centers, whose network is now perfectly consolidated throughout France, have the main mission of training and supporting these young entrepreneurs through a “action learning”. In other words, through access to cutting-edge digital resources, support from mentors (teachers and professionals) offering a large network, or even intensive project creation coaching.

A status that has several advantages

Many benefits are available to students to help them develop their projects. One of the priorities nevertheless remains to manage your time well between your studies and your entrepreneurial project. To get organized, the status allows you to benefit from an arrangement of your time.

The key advantage: This system allows you to work on your project instead of carrying out a compulsory internship or an end-of-studies project, while obtaining the ECTS credits necessary to obtain the diploma.

According to feedback from numerous collectives of young creators, such as the founders of Elpaco, time management remains the main lever for success. This flexibility makes it possible to communicate effectively about its services while integrating new functionalities as development progresses. Thus, the student can advance their business without ever having to sacrifice their academic studies.

If you are a recent graduate, you keep your student benefits (social security, CROUS catering, transport fares, etc.). This status also allows you to access the D2E (Student Entrepreneurial Establishment Diploma). In 2026, this diploma has become a real label of competence, highly valued on a CV to demonstrate one’s capacity for initiative.

A considerable investment to be expected…

Despite the evolution of systems, entrepreneurship remains a demanding field. Several obstacles persist: managing stress and mental load remains a delicate point. Passing your exams while achieving your business objectives remains a heavy commitment.

Being young also sometimes poses the problem of credibility in front of senior partners. The gap between academia and business can be stark. In addition, having a solid address book requires perseverance that only field experience ultimately forges.

The financial question is also central. Despite the aid, the student sometimes has to face phases of precariousness or fluctuating market constraints. As one beneficiary of the status recently pointed out: “It’s an emotional rollercoaster. One day we sign a contract, the next day a partner withdraws. You have to have strong backs. »

A promising conciliation

The outcome of this bet is, ultimately, very positive. Even if the project does not always achieve the expected profitability, becoming a student entrepreneur is an enriching experience that brings maturity and autonomy, “soft skills” that are essential today in the job market.

The system has experienced impressive growth. Although there were around 1,450 beneficiaries in 2015, the figures have stabilized at a high level: there are now more than 7,000 new statuses issued each year. In total, since the launch of the system, nearly 80,000 students have attempted the adventure.

However, the room for progress remains real. Of the nearly 3 million students in France, taking entrepreneurial action remains the responsibility of a daring minority. The notoriety of the status is now acquired, but the challenge for 2026 remains support towards sustainable growth of projects.

Entrepreneurship opens its doors wide to you: with good ideas and unfailing motivation, now is the time to realize your ambitions!
