Factur-X: definition and challenges

Definition

Factur-X is a hybrid electronic invoice format that combines a human-readable PDF file and integrated structured data (XML), which can be used automatically by information systems.

What it actually changes

An invoice can maintain a familiar appearance, like a PDF, while still being treated as data. The company no longer has to choose between readability and automation: the two coexist in the same file.

In practice, this allows:

  • a classic reading for users
  • automatic integration into accounting tools
  • compatibility with the requirements of the reform

Factur-X acts as a transition format between the old and new models.

Why is it strategic?

Factur-X plays an interface role. It facilitates the adoption of electronic invoicing by limiting the break with existing uses.

This format thus makes it possible to accelerate standardization without imposing a brutal transformation of practices. It makes a change acceptable that would otherwise be perceived as more restrictive.

Not to be confused

Factur-X is a standardized format, compliant with electronic invoicing requirements. Conversely, sending a classic PDF by email does not constitute an electronic invoice, even if it contains all the mandatory information.
