EU rejects Mark Zuckerberg’s criticism of content moderation

The European Commission has refuted Mark Zuckerberg’s accusations of an alleged institutionalization of censorship in Europe. She clarified that the Digital Services Act (DSA) only requires the removal of illegal or potentially harmful content, including to children or European democracies, and does not require the removal of legal content.

Meta plans to replace fact-checkers on Facebook, Instagram and Threads with a “community notes” system, similar to that of X, where contributors report posts they consider misleading. The EU has indicated that such a system could be used in Europe, provided that a risk assessment is carried out and submitted to the Commission.

Niklas Zennström: Europe can succeed in AI despite the funding gap with the United States

In an interview given to the Financial Times, Niklas Zennström, renowned European entrepreneur and investor, believes that European startups can prosper in the field of artificial intelligence, despite the funding gap that separates them from their American competitors. According to him, the opportunities lie in the development of applications based on American AI platforms such as those of OpenAI or Google.

“Not everyone needs to develop an extensive language model. You can create value as an application provider, as was done with cloud and mobile,” he said.

While U.S. investments in generative AI have reached nearly $48 billion over 2023-2024, funding in Europe and Israel stands at around $9 billion. This gap can be explained by the dominance of American technology giants, such as Microsoft, Google and Amazon, and their ability to invest massively in these projects.

Via his investment fund Atomico, Niklas Zennström finances European startups such as DeepL (automated translation) and Corti (digital assistants for health).

European Commission condemned for transfer of personal data to the United States

The General Court of the European Union has fined the European Commission €400 for violating data protection rules. This decision follows the transfer of personal data of a German citizen, including his IP address, to Meta Platforms via the “Connect with Facebook” functionality used on the “Conference on the Future of Europe” website.

The court ruled that this transfer, carried out in the absence of appropriate safeguards and despite the absence of an adequate level of protection in the United States in 2022, constituted a serious violation of the individual’s rights. The Commission is found responsible for this infringement and must pay compensation for the moral damage caused.
