On September 23, Quobly, NVIDIA and TERATEC will bring together semiconductor manufacturers, researchers and public officials in Paris. Behind SIAQ, the challenge is less to present one more quantum technology than to resolve the question which will determine the winners: who will be able to manufacture, control and integrate millions of qubits?
A fault-tolerant quantum computer will not be built like a laboratory prototype. It will be necessary to produce qubits by the hundreds of thousands, then by the millions, with homogeneous wafers, controlled yields, control electronics compatible with extreme cold and suitable packaging capacities.
It is this shift that wants to put on the table Semiconductor Industry Advancing Quantum (SIAQ), September 23 at the Imagine Institute, in Paris. Organized by Quobly, NVIDIA and TERATEC, the meeting presents itself as the first meeting dedicated to bringing together the semiconductor industry and that of quantum computing.
The morning will open with Daniel Lossfrom the King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals, pioneer of spin qubits. His presentation will focus on the scientific and technological conditions necessary for scaling up.
It will be followed by an exchange between Krysten Rochereaufor STMicroelectronics, and Nicolas DavalChief Engineering Officer of Quobly, on the economic competitiveness of future quantum computers. The subject deserves better than the usual promises on computing power: a quantum machine will only become a product if its manufacturing, control and operating costs cease to be those of an object of research.
The rest of the program descends into the very subject of this industrial ambition. Christophe MalevilleCTO of Soitec, will present the role of FD-SOI silicon 28 substrates, designed to reduce certain sources of magnetic noise that can disrupt qubits. Tomonori Sekiguchifrom the Hitachi laboratory in Cambridge, will discuss the developments necessary to build a large-scale silicon quantum computer.
The afternoon will move the debate towards integration and industrial policy. Christian Trefzgerrepresenting DG CNECT of the European Commission, will present the European quantum strategy. Bull will return to the integration of superconducting quantum processors and spin qubits into computing infrastructures. Kristin Schumannfor NVIDIA, will present how the group intends to support European quantum players.
The closing round table, moderated by Olivier Ezrattywill return to this coordination of the ecosystem. Several interventions remain to be confirmed. But the subject is already clear: Europe will not count its future quantum champions by the number of publications or prototypes announced. It will count them in wafers, yields, packaging capacities and production lines.
