A first launch into orbit from the second flight, five other launchers already in production and a factory designed to change scale: Isar Aerospace has just reached a major milestone. The success of Spectrum gives concrete expression to the emergence of a new generation of European space companies, capable of bringing together technology, capital and industrial resources to open up new possibilities for access to space.
Seventeen months after a first flight interrupted after about thirty seconds, Spectrum successfully reached orbit. On September 5, 2026, at 10:12 p.m., the ISAR AEROSPACE launch vehicle took off from Andøya, Norway. A success obtained from its second attempt, which brings to space Europe a new player capable of reaching orbit.
In its mission report, Isar announces having accomplished the main sequences of the flight, up to the separation of the payloads after the circularization maneuver. The company indicates that it is continuing to confirm the status of the satellites with its customers. For the company founded in 2018, the result already marks a change in dimension: its launcher now has a first orbital reference.
Europe now has a new player to expand its launch capabilities. It already owned the Ariane and Vega families; Isar enriches this base by adding a company, an industrial organization and a starting site capable of contributing to new missions.
For the teams, it is also a new working base. The first attempt had already fueled this learning. In its report published in September 2025, Isar identified the events causing the failure and described the corrections made to the control of the launcher. The journey accomplished between the two flights shows the importance of this experience.
In Parsdorf, a factory to move into series production
The next stop already has an address: Parsdorf, near Munich. Isar is developing a factory there designed to produce up to 40 Spectrums per year. The company has chosen to carry out the design, manufacturing and testing of its launchers almost entirely in-house, with an important place given to automation. The ambition is to have the means necessary for mass production.
This choice brings the teams who design the vehicles as closely as possible to those who manufacture and test them. Each problem observed can be linked to a part, a process or a design decision. The experience of one campaign can thus fuel the preparation of the next. This organization is made to accumulate knowledge and transform it into product improvements.
For Europe, the bringing together of these resources constitutes a significant sustainable asset, with trained teams, installed equipment, controlled procedures and an ability to lead complex projects. The development of Isar enriches an industrial fabric which will make it possible to prepare for future missions and, ultimately, new generations of vehicles.
This dynamic is already mobilizing other European specialists. The Berlin company Exolaunch ensured the integration of the five satellites of the second flight into its deployment system, before their transport to Andøya. The payloads brought together German, Austrian, Slovenian, Norwegian and Bulgarian projects. Preparing the mission thus involved the launcher manufacturer, an integration specialist and several satellite teams.
The success of Spectrum gives additional perspective to these cooperations. New missions can create opportunities for suppliers, maintain skills and facilitate the transition of scientific or technological projects to their experimentation in orbit. A launcher also becomes an infrastructure useful for the development of other businesses.
The Germany-Norway axis expands European access to space
The Germany-Norway couple expands the geography of European space capabilities, Andøya is designed to serve polar and sun-synchronous orbits. Combined with Spectrum, which targets up to 1,000 kg in low orbit, the site opens an additional route for small satellites and certain dedicated missions.
This diversification continues an explicit orientation of the ESA, which wants to develop a wider range of services alongside Ariane and Vega, which operate from Guyana. Owning multiple launchers, multiple sites and multiple industrial organizations gives Europe more opportunities to meet the needs of operators.
Astroscale and Planet Labs entrust first missions to Spectrum
Isar’s first contracts show that this proposal is of interest beyond Europe, so on September 1, the company announced an agreement with Astroscale Japan to launch ADRAS-J2 in 2027-2028. This debris removal mission, developed as part of a program by the Japanese agency JAXA, requires suitable orbital insertion and a specific launch profile, requirements which Isar is capable of meeting.
The agreement announced in July with Planet Labs Germany also opens up another perspective in Earth observation. The German subsidiary of the American group plans to entrust Spectrum with the launch of a Pelican satellite, which must be assembled in its new Berlin facilities. A project which brings together the manufacturing of a satellite and that of its launcher on German territory.
These missions give direction to the industrial effort. They link investments in factories to identified needs and engaged customers. Orbital success therefore comes at a time when Isar is building the means to serve a demand already materialized by several agreements.
Private capital and a European contract to finance the increase in capacity
This growth is based on capital and a now concrete European commitment. In June, ISAR AEROSPACE announced a series D of 270 million euros intended in particular to develop its operations and series production. Investors thus finance the increase in the company’s capacity, with the objective of transforming its technological developments into industrial activity.
At the end of August, ESA announced a €197.8 million contract with Isar as part of the European Launcher Challenge, mainly funded by Germany, with contributions from Austria and Norway.
In this way, Europe is organizing the conditions for the emergence of a more diversified offer. The program combines launch services and capability enhancement demonstrations. Rocket Factory Augsburg and PLD Space are also among the first contracted operators. Growing multiple businesses expands the skills and solutions that institutions and commercial clients can rely on.
After orbit, the challenge of cadence
For ISAR AEROSPACE, the next challenge will be that of pace: completing the vehicles, testing them and carrying out the campaigns within customer deadlines. This stage will gradually give full scope to orbital success and will make it possible to accumulate decisive references, improve processes and include the launcher in the projects of its users.
