How to succeed in an entrepreneur competition?

Business creator or manager already established, participating in a competition is above all a way to obtain media coverage, but also to gain visibility and credibility. What’s moreeven without winning first prize or being among the finalists, this experience can often constitute a formidable springboard for the future. So, how can you put all the chances on your side? Here are some tips for succeeding in your entrepreneur competition.

Choosing your entrepreneurial competition

If obtaining and retaining customers is an achievement for any entrepreneur, being recognized and distinguished by them, but also by your peers, is certainly just as important. A distant dream for some, a palpable reality for others, it is however not easy to navigate the multitude of entrepreneurial competitions that exist.

National or regional?

Whether national or regional, based on a business concept, know-how or even on the characteristics of a product, choosing an entrepreneur competition is not an easy task. Also, to avoid making a mistake, certain objective criteria must be taken into account upstream in order to be able to make the right decision:

  • The purpose of the competition: Winner, finalist or simple participant, is this competition of interest to my company (financial prize, trophy of honor, impact in terms of image, etc.)? Can it get people talking about it, for how long and to whom? By participating in this competition, am I reaching out to my target audience so that I can ultimately recruit customers and develop my turnover?
  • The theme of the competition: Is it related to my activity? Am I an expert on this topic or should I move towards an area in which I am more competent and where I have the greatest chance of having an impact?
  • The competition criteria: Is it a free competition or is it reserved for certain categories of companies according to criteria of seniority, size or sector of activity for example?
  • Terms of the competition: What investment will this competition require of me, whether in human, financial or time terms? Will I be sufficiently available or could I mobilize collaborators if necessary, both for participation as such and for communication around this event? Will I be able to naturally resist the induced pressure or will I need special coaching?

All the answers relating to the objectives, means and expected results are therefore essential to select your entrepreneurial competition, and for it to become, in addition to a human experience, a profitable investment.

Respect the terms of the entrepreneur competition and take care of the details

Once the choice of competition has been made, the entrepreneur must register and then endeavor to respect each of the stages until the end. From one competition to another, the methods of participation may vary: creation of a paper file or dissertation (presentation of the company, the product, its approach, etc.), demonstration in front of a jury, creation of a work, etc.

If the basic conditions of the competition are important, such as respecting the deadlines or the number of participants within your team for example, those relating to the form are also important. In fact, many entrepreneurs jeopardize their chances of success because they have not brought enough quality to their written and oral presentations. Application files that arrive barely completed, lacking details and depth, or even worse with empty sections, should therefore be avoided, because this lack of care demonstrates your lack of involvement.

Finally, to succeed in your entrepreneurial competition, do not neglect the small mistakes which can make the difference. Indeed, if some of them, which mostly concern details such as spelling mistakes for example, are not eliminatory, they can nevertheless be detrimental to you, particularly if they are produced repeatedly.
