Recipients of first ever Jersey accountancy society bursary announced

JSCCA Bursary 2011 Following the release of this year's A-Level results, the Jersey Society of Chartered and Certified Accountants (JSCCA) has announced the recipients of its Bursary scheme for 2011.

Introduced for the first time this year, the Bursary is designed to help fund students from Jersey to attend a UK university and pursue a degree in a business related subject.

Hautlieu School pupil Ruben Caldeira has been awarded a Bursary in the amount of £5,000 per annum. He is due to commence a degree in Accountancy and Finance at Exeter University in September, having just received three A grades at A-Level.

In addition, Kathryn Rothwell, Hautlieu School, and James Ahier, Victoria College, have also been awarded a bursary of £1,000 to pursue their degrees in Social Sciences at Durham University and Maths and Physics at Warwick respectively.

Alongside the Bursary, the JSCCA has received commitment from a number of local firms to provide assistance with work experience to Bursary recipients during their university studies.

Launched in September 2010, the Bursary attracted a strong number of applicants. Following an initial screening process, which involved applicants being predicted minimum A-Level grades and with preference given to students who might otherwise have struggled with the funding of their tuition and maintenance, a number of applicants were called for an interview, with the eventual recipients ultimately being successful.

Recipient of the full Bursary, Ruben Caldeira said:

“University education can be particularly expensive, not just fees but also books and living costs. I'm delighted to have been awarded the Bursary following the selection process and am looking forward to starting my studies at Exeter this autumn.”

Mike Byrne, Head of Training for the JSCCA, commented:

“Given the changing economic climate and the decrease in government support available to students attending UK universities, a Bursary seemed the best way for the JSCCA to support future accountants and at the same time promote the accountancy profession in Jersey.”

Andy Isham, President of the JSCCA, added:

"We hope that this Bursary will ensure that Jersey's business leaders of tomorrow are given an opportunity to fulfil their potential. The quality of the applicants for this first year has been hugely impressive and in Ruben, Kathryn and James we have three students of the highest calibre who we are delighted to be able to support."

The JSCCA has committed to offer the Bursary for at least the next five years. Established in 1974, the JSCCA promotes and supports the accountancy profession in Jersey and has over 750 members from across different accountancy bodies.
