JT is ahead of Europe on data roaming rates

Ahead of the introduction of a reduced price cap on roaming charges across Europe, JT has launched a new roaming solution to help islanders significantly reduce their data roaming costs.

The new EU Regulation on roaming charges is due to come into force on 1st July 2012 and will further reduce the wholesale price capping of charges between European operators with savings then passed on through a new capped retail pricing. However, as the Channel Islands are not part of the EU, JT and its customers cannot benefit from what is referred to as wholesale price-capping.

To address this issue and help keep down the cost of using mobile devices while travelling, JT has extended the terms of its roaming bolt-on to ensure they can provide their customers with a data roaming solution.

Cara Murphy, Head of Roaming at JT, explained what the company is doing to provide cost effective roaming solutions for islanders: “Unfortunately we do not benefit from the wholesale price capping regulation; however, from the 1st June our customers can significantly reduce their data roaming costs while travelling by taking advantage of our new roaming solution. Our new roaming bolt-on could save customers up to 85% on their roaming data charges across Europe.

“At JT we are committed to continually reviewing our roaming rates and we work hard to negotiate lower wholesale costs with all International operators, to offer customers competitive rates. We are listening to customers and providing innovative and valued-led solutions which provide a cost effective way of managing data roaming charges. So, the new data bolt-on not only brings the cost per megabyte well below the EU capped price, but one month earlier as well meaning that JT is actually ahead of Europe!”

It is estimated that the new EU regulation means European providers will be providing data roaming to consumers at around 59p per Mb. JT’s mobile data bolt-on costs just £5 per month and customers will be only be charged 50p per Mb of data used when travelling throughout Europe.

In addition, thanks to an agreement between JT and AeroMobile, customers travelling with Virgin Atlantic on the routes where it is offering in-flight mobile phone calls, texts and web access, can enjoy the new service and favourable roaming rates. Virgin Atlantic is the first airline in Britain to offer this service which was launched in May 2012 on the London to New York route.

JT also provides advice online at www.jtglobal.com about managing roaming charges and offers a free text service to warn customers when they are accessing data when abroad.
