After six years as chairman of the Guernsey branch of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners, Alison MacKrill has been succeeded by Paul Hodgson. Mrs MacKrill, a Senior Associate in the Fiduciary Law Group at Carey Olsen, leaves the local branch in very good order, with more than 700 members, including 200 students. Mr Hodgson, Managing Director of Butterfield Trust in Guernsey, said that she had contributed a great deal to the role. “One of the great strengths of the Guernsey branch of STEP has been the commitment provided by its chairmen. Between them Alison MacKrill, Gavin St Pier and Michael Betley have dedicated 12 years of continuity and leadership which has been to the benefit of Guernsey’s fiduciary sector,” he said. During her time as Chairman Mrs MacKrill contributed information about Guernsey to the STEP directory and “A Practical Guide to the Transfer of Trusteeships” as well as writing for several legal publications. Mr Hodgson said: “Alison has done a fantastic job as STEP chairman and I hope that I can continue her good work.” STEP Worldwide Chief Executive David Harvey said: ‘Branch development is a very important part of STEP’s growth and I know how much work goes into this area. Alison’s commitment to STEP’s Guernsey branch has been fantastic. She has done a great job steering the Group, helping it grow over the last six years, and we wish her the very best as we welcome Paul Hodgson as successor.’ Mr Hodgson is a Chartered Accountant, a Fellow of the Securities and Investment Institute, and a member of STEP. He gained experience in Australia, London and Hong Kong for KPMG before moving to Guernsey in 1998. He joined Butterfield shortly afterwards and was appointed Managing Director in 2003. He has been included in the Top 20 Leading Trustees in the Citywealth Leaders List for the last three years. He is also a committee member of the Guernsey Association of Trustees. A large part of STEP’s work is to provide education and training for those working in the fiduciary sector. Students in Guernsey are mostly studying for the International Diploma and International Foundation Certificate. There are regular lunchtime and evening lectures on topics relevant to trust and company administration which regularly attract audiences of up to 100 people.
